10 Incredible Years of Action: A brief History of PokerStars
PokerStars ran its first games in December 2001, and now stands proud as the most popular online poker site on the planet, with millions of registered players from around the globe. The World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) ran for the first time in 2002 with just nine events and a total prize pool of $800,000. It’s now the premier annual tournament series, peaking in 2010 when the prize pool guarantee hit $50,000,000.
The action at the tables went into overdrive in 2003 when an amateur player named Chris Moneymaker won his seat for the World Series Main Event via a PokerStars satellite. He went on to win the Championship, kick starting a boom in online poker. Within a few years PokerStars was sending hundreds of qualifiers to Las Vegas, all hoping to emulate Moneymaker and earn that life-changing score.
In addition to the introduction of hugely successful online events like the Sunday Million (2006) and the Spring Championship of Online Poker (2009), PokerStars has also brought live poker to the masses, with tours like the European Poker Tour (EPT), Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) and UK & Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) generating massive player fields, and even bigger prize pools.
The site has produced the best poker talent along the way, including Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier (first player to reach VIP Club Supernova Elite status in the 2007, 2008 PCA Champion, two-time WCOOP winner in 2009, 2011 SCOOP winner) and Anders ‘Donald’ Hoyer Berg (first-ever PokerStars World Series Main Event qualifier, 3-time WCOOP winner, SCOOP Champion) plus many more, proving that PokerStars is the home of true poker talent. Team PokerStars Pro also dominates the live circuit, with legends like Daniel Negreanu, plus big-hitters like Jason Mercier.
PokerStars has also set World Records for the most players online at once (300,000+ in 2009), the largest-ever tournament field (149,196 in 2009) and the most hands dealt (over 70 billion as of November 2011). The site has also won countless awards for its game software and customer support, and has donated millions of dollars to charities thanks to your generosity. And we’re not done yet. Here’s to the next 10 years.
