In another first for the excellent P & E team of Genting Highlands Sdn Bhd, an open poker tournament available to members of the public was held at the Genting International Showroom, adjacent to the Genting casino. Boasting a guaranteed prize pool of RM$200,000 and a buy in of RM$550, there was bound to be lots of value for any player making the trip. A final turnout of roughly 380 players created a small overlay for the organizers. Judging from the active presence of kakis in the International Room after the tournament however, it looked highly likely that the overlay was covered, and then some.

The tournament stretched over 2 days, with the first day comprising 3 separate flights, concluding once each flight was whittled down to 60 players. Pokerkaki representation was looking good going into day 2, with only a few kakis eliminated from the first day’s proceedings. From the get-go on day 2 however, players began dropping like flies, owing variously to the steep blind structure, short level duration, and general bad play. With no one seeming to ever hold more than a 15 big blind stack, the day 2 field of 180 reached its final table in several hours.

The charge to the final table was led by the affable Vinson ‘slkia’ See, one of the more recognizable faces in the local poker scene. He was closely followed by none other than the extremely popular Erique ‘necrohavoc’ Tan, twice champion of the Battle on the High Seas tournaments. Both players made it to the final six, where a private deal was brokered to divide the remaining prize money equally, leaving the title, the trophy, and bragging rights to play for.

With the deal in place, Vinson exited the tournament in 6th place, with Erique finishing a very respectable 3rd. Both players consequently picked up a very tidy RM$25,000 for their skill, patience and resolve, their successes also in no small amount due to the vociferous efforts of the Pokerkaki railbirds.

On behalf of the community, the Pokerkaki Team congratulates both Erique and Vinson on their fantastic results. Look out for details of the next Genting Highlands Open Tournament, already in the preparatory pipeline.
