Multi Tabling For Grinding.

Postby mrpossum » Tue Aug 26, 2008 9:29 pm

Hi i realised many people do this.
Like multi table like what 4 tables or even more.
But i tried it before but i realised that it is very hard to concentrate.
It turns out that its pretty hard to apply any strategy , only playing the cards.
Is this normal ?
Or is it just me being a noob and cant focus ?
Cause like i tend to lose when i get lousy cards.

Most of us started out wondering how in the world anyone can multi table. Later, we realize we cannot live without it hehe. Just start with 2 first, and then slowly increase the no of tables. Now, I can do 9 easily.

The key to multitable is to recognize that many of the decisions you will be facing are marginal. If you find that you are in a tough position to call or fold, just fold. In the long run, such marginal decisions are neutral EV, meaning you will win as often as you lose, so folding is the easy choice.

But don't you think its kind of impossible to make certain plays considering the fact that you
can't focus on what kind of players you are up against etc.
Becomes you are only playing the cards.
Or does everyone just play the cards not the people ?

What limits are you currently playing?

If you are not multi-tabling now, I am guessing u should be at the lowest ones right? At those limits, no need to worry about playing people or making fancy plays. ABC poker and value bet is enough.

multitabling is a good way to speed up your learning process.
However it can also be a stumbling block to your own progress if you autopilot too much.

As Guojing has said, at lower limits it can be advisable to avoid marginal decisions and just fold. At higher limits, embracing such marginal situations and making the best EV decision can determine a significant portion of your winrate, the difference between a very good player and a mediocre player. It is just not profitable to fold everytime u face a marginal situation at higher limits.

Find a good balance b/w no of tables plus you can get good reads from all players and stick to it. It is always good to cut down on no. of tables to focus on your decisions in your path to improve.

Went from 40 down to about 10.
So i guess i shall try out what you guys recommend.

And how many tables do you guys usually do ?

I currently play 4 tables of 6-max, I think you could consider taking your time on this multi tabling thing.
Just focus on playing a good single table and grind out a solid win rate 1st, then maybe slowly add a table and try to grind out a profit after maybe a week or 2 sample. From then on add table and grind, add another table and grind until you finally reach your limit.

My personal view is that if you really wanna focus on your deep stack cash game skills, try not to play more then 4 tables unless you really have very good attention and concentration levels. Its more important to learn from your games and play a adaptive game against your opponent instead of being a heavy tabling ABC robot if you plan to slowly move up to the mid or high stakes in the future.

Most important once your have level passed the micro stakes, I would strongly advise you to invest some $$ in getting some good software like Poker Tracker 3.

Cheers ^_^

1 table is also good to build up on your patience and focused judgments of opponent's hand ranges/strengths

start out at four tables and work your way up slowly. I can't stand playing one table unless I am deep in a tourney which doesn't happen. EVER.
