Whats the worst starting hand?

Postby Kungfusion » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:07 am

Would like to hear your views, this question taken off the Donkey Test:

What is the worst hand in holdem playing heads up, all-in pre-flop, if your opponent will call you with any two cards?

1) 2c3s
2) 2s7d
3) KdJc

Please reply and explain your choice. Relatively simple question. If response good, will bring in other tougher questions to discuss.

if you use pokerstove its 23o which has the lowest equity.
But 27 is hardest to play post flop lacking the straight possibility

Thats my point excatly... traditionally, everyone i know would say that 2 7 is the worst starting hand... but i got a nice surprise from pokerstove showing it actually has more value than 3 2... Interesting!

yeah a lot of ppl has the misconception that 27 has the lowest equity.

But KJ in option 3 is there for a good reason, its a hand that most new players have the lowest expectation.

normally people just muck 23 or 27 preflop but many lose a lot of $$ with KJ, its a tough hand to play for non-experts as it is often dominated or far behind common hands that TAGs play like AK,AQ,AJ,KQ and also AA down to JJ~

If you look at your pokertracker and see that your KJ is green over the long run, you're probably quite a good player ^_^
But if you see you 23 and 27 is positive then you must be DUrrrr or phil ivey Wahahaha

2/3 is worse in heads up play. With just 2 going for the pot, it's most likely going to be a pair or a high card that wins it. In which case - you'd rather have a 7 than a 3.

2/7 is worst in a full table ring game because it's the lowest hand that also has no possibility of a two-card straight or flush.

i hate trouble hands like K-2 or Q4 eg....u can hit top pairs but if anyone else hits with higher kicker...it becomes tricky

yeah with hands like Kx or Qx, most of the time I'm praying to hit a toppair with X
if I have K9, i'm hoping to flop 9xx instead of Kxx~ since hitting the king gives me a top pair that has a strong chance of being dominated which could lead to losing quite a medium size pot. Hitting the 9 makes me feel a lot more comfortable since I'll probably not lose a big pot no matter how I play and the road looks a lot more clear for turn and river play

Play less of these type of K9 KT KJ hands when you are first starting out since you often win small pots and lose big pots with them if you tend to overplay toppair good kickers. In 6max if you decide to play these hands, especially when they are suited, since everyone loves suited cards cos they look so pretty, tend to play them more in position instead of out of position. Many a times I have folded KJ, QJ, KQ offsuit, AT and even AJ to raises when I am in the SB/BB, just because I don't like the prospect of hitting top pair but facing multiple bets from the opponent and I have no idea where I am in the hand, and no way to control the size of the pot.
