Why did RWS shut down their poker room???

Postby Sleepy Hippo » Mon Jul 19, 2010 5:25 pm

I think most kakis in SG who have been eagerly anticipating the opening of the two IRs are with me on this.. I am sorely disappointed that the casinos have decided not to have poker. RWS actually set aside a poker area but they shut it down before even a hand was dealt, converting it to baccarat or some other nonsense games obviously. As for Sands, they never even made any attempts to have poker.

The casinos are making a big mistake in doing this. They just think of their profit from baccarat and the foolish aunties who queue up to give them their life's savings. Whereas they are totally missing out the chance to open up a new market for poker players.... a market of INTELLIGENT people who enjoy playing a game of skill, and can afford to play it in the LONG RUN (not like baccarat)

Do you guys not think that the authorities should not step in and do something?? I don't get it, SG is a first world country and trying to be more "open", yet poker players have to always remain anxious while scampering around the underground locations to find games. Why can't we play poker LEGALLY in SG when it is possible to do so in places such as Russia and Philippines???

What do you guys think! Share your opinons pls. I am not trying to flame anyone, just stating my POV.

i am really disappointed they close down the poker room before any hand was dealt.

Erm, what do you suggest the authorities do? Legalizing poker won't help the situation. Don't tell me you want the authorities to force them to open a poker table?

Casinos in S'pore and M'sia do not open poker tables simply because they don't think it's profitable, not because they are afraid of the authorities or something.

I don't see how the authorities can do anything about casinos not opening a poker table.

ehh not sure what can be done but it's very disappointing that they shut it down even before giving it a chance! poker is the most popular game by far and actually takes skill, and RWS could enjoy great publicity if they hold poker tournaments. i mean things like the APT, WPT get HUGE coverage in mainstream media elsewhere! i think it's just a bad decision by RWS...they obviously have no idea about the poker scene.

so much for high hopes of having proper card rooms like philippines here in sg..for now everyone has to play at poorly run house games....

Ask the authorities to step in and make RWS and MBS allocate at least 4 tables for poker? After all poker is a much more 'healthy' and social game than f***ing baccarat..

Well it is a shame that theres no poker there~ but honestly speaking you have to admit, poker is just not as profitable against other games such as baccarat. And casinos are all about maximising profits.

Seriously? That's your idea?

I wonder if I can ask the authorities to step in and make one of the restaurants near my house serve chicken chop. It's so much more delicious.

yahh they are but they dont see that poker can actual generate tons of profit through publicity and big events like APT, WPT, etc... those generate tons of revenue as well as huge publicity for the casinos. Resorts World Manila is hosting APT this year..we can just see how great this will be for them. i think sg is rly losing out.

Publicity = Profit????? Nah, i don't think so......Reality is that Casino prefer players losing $$$ to the house than to other players.........

If an average Baccarat table can earn eg. S$30,000 a day, what would be the equivalent rake/time to have equal Revenue for the Casino? Are we prepared to pay 10% rake + S$10 an hour time?

Let's be realistic, give the IR some time, when the frenzy subsides, they would be forced to think of ways to generate traffic and revenue steams.
