1) should i start the raise? i lim because the game was still early, in 1st pos hoping to 3bet a raiser. 2) i don't feel that the other 4 players have stronger hands then mine. 3)how much is the best raise here? my feeling is, it very hard for players at this lvl to fold their hands if the bet is not strong enough+they already committd some chip. 4)my intention was to win whatever was in the pot.
1. You should open the raise from early position with a hand as strong as jacks. This hand is good, but not strong enough to limp 3bet preflop, especially because you only get called most of the time by hands that you flip against (ak, aq) and hands that crush you (qq, kk, aa).
2. When you say that you feel that other players don't have a strong hand, is this a feel thing or based on a read? If it's based on a feeling only, ignore that and respect raises.
3. At early pos I raise to about 3-4x the bb. Let people call with bad hands, you will win in the long run against their hands. When a scare card comes on the flop, you can fold with minimal loss. You don't have to over commit preflop with just jj.
4. Just standard raise, if an ace flops, you can safely fold because most people call with an ace. If no other card shows you can play a big pot because people don't fold their draws or top pair. Because of this, you either lose a small pot or win a big one. Isn't hat better?
JJ is a good hand, even if you are UTG. However extreme caution needs to be exercised, especially if you plan to 3 bet. 3 betting does not mean re-raising from 100 to all in of 1400. There is no point at all doing something like that with JJ as the only hand that will call that huge over-raise is one that either have yours crushed, like QQ, KK, or AA or 2 overcards, giving you about a 50% chance to win. This type of play in most situations is negative EV.
You CAN 3 bet say to 400-500 but i dont really like this play. If the other person 4bets you and goes all in you would have no choice but to fold.
Thats why i also think its fine to open-raise with your Jacks and if lots of people call and outflop you you can still fold your hand with minimal loss. Remember that a pair of jacks is just a pair of jacks.
In short, JJ is a good solid hand, but is not a premium by any chance and may be easily crushed. Raising with it is good, but it should not be taken too far.
