“Macau will become the largest poker kingdom in the world.”

Postby ooofish » Mon Dec 13, 2010 12:52 am

Three grand events, namely the Poker King Anniversary Tournament, APT Macau and the Macau Poker Cup Championship (MPCC), that just took place in Macau attracted many poker celebrities, such as Phil Ivey and Tom Dwan to town for their first time, bringing honor to this humble Asian Las Vegas.

Although the tournaments have ended, they still stay behind and often appear at the i love pokerkaki at the StarWorld Hotel. In January, they will be gathering at the Crown Casino in Melbourne, Australia for the Aussie Millions Tournament, one of the largest poker events in the Southern Hemisphere.

After that, they will return to experience Chinese New Year in the unique blend of Chinese and Western culture in Macau. Because of Macau’s strategic location, I believe that the town will become the transit point for poker elites between the Southern and Northern Hemisphere. Meanwhile, we are one step closer to what Poker King Johnny Chan said, “Macau will become the largest poker kingdom in the world.”

DWAN WINS HK$68 MILLION IN MACAU HEADS-UP REMATCH

Tom Dwan has completed his second heads-up match with an unknown Chinese businessman and walked out from the session with a profit of HK$68 million (more than US$8.5 million). The pair were playing at the i love pokerkaki at Macau’s StarWorld Hotel and Casino for stakes of HK$10,000/20,000.

In the first heads-up encounter between Dwan and the Chinese businessman, the Full Tilt pro lost HK$20 million. The businessman agreed to play Dwan heads-up on the condition that both players would have to reveal their hole cards after every hand regardless of whether or not there was a showdown.

Respected tournament director, Matt Savage was the first to break the news via the Two Plus Two forum, posting, "Despite the light turnout at the Asian Poker Tour Macau the cash games are some of the biggest in history as Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Chau Giang, and John Juanda are playing HK$5,000-10,000 with some Chinese businessmen. The game plays much bigger and there was about 40 million on the table last night when I saw the game." The current exchange rate is currently around 7.75 HK$ to one US dollar, meaning there was around $5.16m in play!

Dwan was still in the Main Event when he heard of the massive cash game developing his attention turned to that. Savage reported, "Tom Dwan made it through day one in the 5K main event but only came downstairs to play one hand 10-4 off suit in an attempt to bust and get back to the cash game but instead he doubled up and asked me to call him as soon as he was under 20 BB's. We are down to 35 players and paying 18." Dwan finally busted in 25th place.
