Singapore’s Patrick Lee Tames Red Dragon

Singapore’s Patrick Kar Keng Lee has emerged triumphant at the final Red Dragon of 2011. Lee came into the final day as one of the shorter stacks with 142,000, but dug deep and played patiently to defeat the 478-strong field, the second largest in Macau Poker Cup history.

With a prize pool of HK$4,780,000 and HK$1,039,700 on offer for first place, play was fast and furious for the early levels and Lee flew under the radar for the early part of the day. Down to around 10 big blinds at one point, Lee got his last 100,000 in the middle with [Ts] [Th] against the [As] [6s] of China’s Yang Zhang just 40 minutes into the day’s action.

It looked like Lee’s tournament was all but over when the flop came [Ad] [Jh] [Ah] to put Zhang firmly in the driver’s seat. It was a case of river to the rescue however, as Lee spiked the [Td] on the final card to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and secure the chips he needed to make the final table.

China’s Xiaobo Zhou, who came into Day 3 with a commanding chip lead and was busting players left, right and centre, dominated much of the day’s action. Zhou seemed almost unstoppable, steamrolling the tournament all the way through to the final, even powering into a commanding 2.5 million chip lead after tangling several times with fellow big stack Jun Wah Yap and ending up with the best of it on every occasion. After Zhou eliminated the unfortunate Yap in fourth place to move up to over 4 million in chips when his [Ah] [2s] cruelly out-flopped Yap’s [Ad] [Qc] it looked like a foregone conclusion.

However, pride comes before a fall and Zhou’s hubris saw him toppled from his pedestal. The beginning of the end came after Zhou unwisely called Lee’s all-in the very next hand with . Lee, holding hit top two to push him up to 800,000 in chips, and Zhou doubled up the Singaporean again a scant few hands later to push Lee over the 1.6 million mark.

When the end came for Zhou it was quick and saw the Chinese player reduced from hero to zero in the blink of an eye. It all came down to a misstep in a blind on blind battle against Lee that developed into a huge pot. Zhou check-raised all-in on the turn holding [Ad] [Qs] on a board reading [Td] [Kd] [2c] [4s] after being three-bet by Lee on the flop. Lee snap called with [Tc] [Ks] for top two pair and scooped the monstrous 4.9 million chip pot to rocket into the chip lead.

Japan’s Tetsuya Tsuchikawa administered the coup de grace a few hands later after his [Kd] [3d] turned the flush to beat Zhou’s [Ah] [7h] to take play heads-up.

However, Lee’s 2-1 chip lead proved too much for Tsuchikawa to overcome with the Singaporean applying the pressure to successfully whittle him down to around 1.1 million until he took a stand with [Td] [Ts] . Lee made the call holding [As] [Jc] and the board ran out [Ad] [Qs] [4s] [Ks] [6h] to grant Lee the win.
