Police arrested 14 people on Wednesday after cracking down on an illegal gambling den in a private residential unit in Sin Ming Estate.

Those arrested were all male, aged between 17 and 37 years old. They included students from polytechnics and secondary schools as well as two men who are believed to have been managing the establishment.

When police entered the location on Wednesday evening, the suspects were playing a variant of the poker game. Paraphernalia such as gaming chips, cards, poker tables and cash amounting to $1,850 were seized as well.

Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, anyone convicted of gaming in a common gambling house could be fined up to $5,000 or imprisoned for up to six month, or both.

full story

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested 14 people in an operation against an illegal gambling den in Jalan Isnin, a private residential estate in Bishan.

Two male suspects have been arrested for operating an illegal gambling while 12 others were arrested for illegal gambling at the unit.

The suspects are aged between 17 and 37 years old, with eight of them believed to be students. Channel NewsAsia understands two of the students hail from a top school nearby. (RI ?)

Police said they mounted the operation on Wednesday and found the group playing a type of poker game.

Gambling—related paraphernalia such as gaming chips, cards, poker tables and cash amounting to S$1,850 were also seized.

Besides the students, two male subjects believed to be the ones managing the operations were also arrested.

Neighbours told Channel NewsAsia that they had seen strangers coming in and out of the house for months. It is believed a pair of brothers, aged around 20 years old, were the ones who rented the unit.

Channel NewsAsia understands they would invite gamblers through an online forum, leaving only their mobile numbers on the website (chatbox) . (admin always tell them not to post but apparently they dont listen)

Investigations are ongoing.

Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, any person convicted of gaming in a common gaming house can be fined up to S$5,000 or jailed for up to six months.

Anyone found guilty of managing a place used as a gaming house shall be liable on conviction to a fine of not less than S$5,000 and not more than S50,000 and jailed for up to three years.
