I'm having this error -2/-83 error as well. Using Starhub too. Of the suggestions I read in this thread, the removing "update" from the exe file/shortcut works.
However, my question is what happens if I need to update Pokerstars? Doesn'y seem a like a permanent solution.

How did you other Starhub users fix it? Please help, thanks in advance guys!

So I got a reply from the pokerstars technical team:

Thank you for your email.

The problem likely is that our main website,
http://www.pokerstars.com

, is being blocked by your ISP or
Government. Unfortunately this has the effect of blocking the
update component of our software, which results in you being
unable to connect when you click on the PokerStars program link.

Your only option is to bypass the update component and run the
main game component directly. This normally does not get blocked
by the firewall, but it will only work until the next update. At
that point you will be forced to reinstall the software (to get
the update) from our website. The method will then work again.

To run the game component directly, follow these steps:

1. Go to Start > My Computer
2. Navigate to the folder containing the PokerStars files (the
default location is C:\Program Files\PokerStars)
3. Double click (run) the file PokerStars (it may also be listed
as PokerStars.exe or PokerStars GUI with a type of 'Application')

When we release an update you may get an error message stating
something to the effect of 'Server Protocol Mismatch' and you
will be required to reinstall the software.

You may wish to back up "user.ini" and "notes.xml" from the
PokerStars settings folder. To do this simply open the PokerStars
software (if possible) and click on "Help" -> "Open My Settings
Folder" and locate those two files and copy them to a safe
temporary location. If you cannot open the software you will need
to manually navigate to the settings folder to locate those files.

For Windows XP and older (C:Program Files\PokerStars\):

1. Double click "My Computer" on your desktop or start menu
2. Double click "C:" drive to view your hard drive
3. Double click "Program Files" folder
4. Scroll down and double click on "PokerStars" (or
PokerStars.NET)
5. Locate "user.ini" or "user" and "notes.xml"
6. Copy the files to a safe temporary location

For Windows Vista and Windows 7
(C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\PokerStars\):

1. Click Start
2. Type the following or copy/paste into the Search and press
Enter:
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\PokerStars (or PokerStars.NET)
3. Locate "user.ini" or "user" and "notes.xml"
4. Copy the files to a safe temporary location

Once those are backed up, uninstall PokerStars from Control Panel
-> Add/Remove Programs. When the program is fully uninstalled
please restart your computer. When the computer has restarted,
download and install a fresh copy of the software from our
website.

http://77.87.179.116/PokerStarsInstall.exe

Install a new copy of PokerStars by clicking on the file you just
downloaded. After it is complete be sure to copy back your
"user.ini" and "notes.xml" files.

After doing this you should be able to run the PokerStars program
using the first set of steps again. Please let us know if you
have any problems running the software bypassing the updates.

If you have additional questions, please do not hesitate to
contact us again.

Hope that helps.

In short, the answer from them is - bypass the update which is causing the problems and enter the game directly. Then, if you have to update, backup your user.ini file and notes that youve kept/written about players and redownload everything from their website again. Then paste your user.ini file and notes back in the latest pokerstars program you have installed.

Hi,

Im experiencing the exact same problem you guys have encoutered above. I tried to edit the files via the ways you guys have said earlier, either by editing the pokerstars.user.ini file with the [Debug] RunUpdateCheck=0 method or the [Connect] Singnet method way both i've still been unable to log onto pokerstars on my macbook.
