Xiao Yang Cui Wins Event 1 at Macau Poker Cup

MACAU, CHINA, February 19, 2012 – PokerStars Macau at Casino Grand Lisboa had a record opening weekend for the 15th edition of the Macau Poker Cup: Red Dragon which runs from February 18-26.

Event 1: $3,000 NLH was won by Xiao Yang Cui from Australia who bested a field of 196 players and collected HKD $127,100 for his victory. In total, 22 players cashed for their share of the HKD $518,616 prize pool in the largest opening event since the 9-day MPC schedule began last year.

Cui dominated the final table and entered heads up play against Taiwanese Chen An Lin with a 9-to-1 chip lead. In the final hand, Lin moved all-in with Ad5d and was quickly called by Cui who held AsJs.

A five on the flop gave Lin some hope but the board cards of 5-9-Q-7-4 were all spades to give the Chinese Aussie a nut flush for the title.

The HKD $3,000 buyin event was the first of 9 Official Asia Player of the Year Events during the MPC: Red Dragon and Cui holds the early lead where the eventual winner will receive a 1-year sponsorship with PokerStars Macau.

"This is my first time playing a tournament in Macau...I plan to play all the events this time." said the 26-year old poker pro. "I'm planning to build up my (APOY) points and get the sponsorship from PokerStars Macau this year."

Event 1: $3,000 NLH - Final Table Results

Sunday's poker action also included the Event 2: Charity Event which was won by Singapore's Min Soon Lim who outlasted a 94-player field winning HKD $47,800 plus a HKD $11,000 Red Dragon entry. The long running charity tournament raised HKD $47,000 for local Macau charities such as Caritas de Macau and the MCDA.

It was a an easy finish for Lim who had 95% of the chips in play when the final hand came against Ping-Hsiang Hsu. The Taiwanese player moved all his remaining chips with AK and Lim decided to make a pot odds call with J7.

The board ran A-T-7-Q-K for the unlikely straight sending the 33-year old into the winner's circle.

The banker previously had a runner-up finish in the same event so he was ecstatic with the victory. "I'm so happy, this is my first time winning a tournament. I was so unlucky last time."

Event 2: Charity Event - Final Table Results

Min Soon Lim (Singapore) -- $58,800
Ping-Hsiang Hsu (Chinese Taipei) -- $42,900

mjfx, congrat on your winning a tournament.

I noticed that I am wondering if that bronze status horse is included in a prize trophy , or your own lucky charm ?

Korean Kang leads Day 1A of the Red Dragon

Opening Main Event flight draws record field of 283 in the Macau Poker Cup: Red Dragon
MACAU, CHINA, February 24, 2012 – Asia's premiere poker series was already drawing record numbers at the PokerStars Macau poker room over the last 5 days so it was little surprise that the Macau Poker Cup: Red Dragon lifted the bar even higher on opening day of the main event.

The Red Dragon tournament brought 283 heroes to the green felt on Thursday's Day 1A -- previous 1A record was 217 -- and the signature event's record of 509 runners looks well within reach.

"We never assume anything and I think that's a great part of our team's success. We continue to stay hungry and push ourselves to improve." said Fred Leung, PokerStars Country Manager. "What's more amazing about the Day 1A field is that it's relatively low in well known players so we could get real close to 600 entries by Friday."

Leung added, "There are already 60 players from China and that really shows how much this region has embraced the Macau Poker Cup as a series and PokerStars Macau to serve the best poker experience in Asia."

Leading the 97 surviving Day 1A runners -- including 46 PokerStars players -- is Dong Woo Kang from Korea with 125,200 chips. Close behind are China's Lu Chen (121,100), fellow countryman Ke Chen (104,200), Kazakhstan's Roman Paxyuth (114,800), and Taiwan's Shao-hung Lee (109,700) who round out the Top 5 stacks.

Other notables include 2010 Macau Poker Cup Championship (MPCC) winner Julian Hasse (38,200), high roller specialist David Steike (32,200), and DZPK president Ted Wang (20,200).

2011 Asia Player of the Year Shaq Lin didn't make it through Thursday night's play and others joining him on the rail include 2009 MPCC winner Devan Tang, 2010 Macau Millions champion Justin Chan, and former-Red Dragon slayer Mark Benasa.

While most of the players entering Casino Grand Lisboa had their minds focused on the main event, Singapore's Tommy Liang was busy winning event no. 5 which drew a record 214 runners for the $5,000 KO Bounty tournament.

With HKD $729,640 in the prize pool and another HKD $214,000 worth of bounties up for grabs the final three competitors played cautiously despite agreeing on a 3-way deal to alter the remaining payouts.

Hong Kong's Jay Tan drew a large crowd of supporters as she KOed Malaysia's Darian Tan in 3rd place to set up the heads up match with Liang.

After a crippling hand, where Jay Tan was outkicked, she decided to make a final stand with Kd-6c and looked good as Liang made a pot odds call with 8d-4d.

However, the pre-flop advantage would quickly turn to dust as the board ran 4s-8s-Qh-6d-Jh giving the Singaporean 2-pair for win. Liang won HKD $148,400 for his 1st place finish and another HKD $8,000 in bounties.

Event 5: $5,000 KO Bounty - Final Table Results

1.Tommy Liang (Singapore) -- $148,400
2.Jennette "Jay" Tan (Hong Kong) -- $120,000
3.Darian Tan (Malaysia) -- $100,000
4.Artem Lobus (Russia) -- $54,700
5.Brian Lovett (USA) -- $43,800
6.Han Ruo Goh (Singapore) -- $36,500
7.Dong Woo Kang (Korea) -- $29,200
8.Jimmy Pan (Netherlands) -- $21,900
9.Zheng Tai Tan (Singapore) -- $18,200
10.Lee Drotzur (USA) -- $14,740

Despite the large turnout for Day 1A, a vast majority of Asia's poker celebrities will be in Friday night's Day 1B field.

Headlining that list is 2-time World Champion Johnny Chan; former Red Dragon champions Celina Lin, Raymond Wu, Patrick Lee, Victor Chen, 2009 APOY Kitty Kuo; and, Team PokerStars Pros Vivian Im and 2010 APOY Bryan Huang.

Players can qualify to the Red Dragon main event at PokerStars Macau where live satellites are still running.

Event 6: Red Dragon, Day 1B begins Friday at 8:10 PM HKT and comes with a HKD $3,000,000 guarantee.

13 Singaporeans played Day 1A.

Sadly, most of them busto except kaki 'whysomafan' with 24K survived to Day 2(maybe there are some unknown Singaporeans that survived but I was too tired to look for them).

Hopefully the Day 1B kakis can do better tomorrow.

Good luck guys!
