gosubay's blog - overcoming MSNL at Pokerstars

Postby gosubay » Thu May 03, 2012 3:36 am

Hi fellow kakis! Some of you might have seen my recent posts on pokerkaki. Never been much of a live player though I did play in some raked and home games before. I have also visited Macau and Vegas once, visited their casinos there. Also played at LWPS once. Let me reintroduce myself again

I'm Galvin and I'm going to study in my final year in NTU next sem. Started playing Poker late 2008 but only decided to take it seriously in Jan 2009 (2nd year of Army). I didn't know what to do with my life at that point in time and I also didn't know what I wanted to study so I opted to go for the most generic course (Business) and hope that I could make some side pocket money in the SAF.

Timeline
2008: In 2008 I already busted two starting capitals from another site at Pokerstars. This time I decided to use my brother's name to make my final account and I decided that I would give up if I went bust for the third time.
Jan 2009: So I started with my third $50 playing a Short Stack Strategy (20 BB buyin) at NL10 FR. I lost a lot and was left with $20 but I was fortunate enough to win a milestone hand so that boosted my bankroll to $120.
Apr 2009: Earned $1000. I managed to resurrect my Titan Poker Account because of a Tell-A-Friend Promotion ($100) and built my bankroll there.
May 2009: Lost the majority of my Titan poker money. I peaked at $4000 but I was just running hot.
Jul 2009: Redeposited $750 at Pokerstars and started learning how to play with 100 BB. Played 6-max this time round at NL25.
Oct 2009: Reached NL100 with a bankroll of 3000+
Dec 2009: Started taking shots at NL200 and I moved part of my bankroll to Ipoker (TheAsiaPoker). Total bankroll was around 10k.
Jan 2010: Completed NS on 15 Jan 2010. I have half a year to spare.
Mar 2010: Moved back to Pokerstars playing NL400 FR. Started receiving coaching.
May 2010: Went through a super huge downswing. Lost 33% of my bankroll.
Jul 2010: Moved to FTP to play Rush Poker NL400 FR. Did very well in the first few months. Made 15k per month in Jul and Aug
Sep-Dec 2010: Another super huge downswing.
Jan 2011: Found a new coach, dropped back to NL200 and NL100. Fixed many leaks and starting making money again. Doing well with steady earnings
Jun 2011: Went to Macau and got destroyed at the live games. Lost 8k USD, about half of it was bad luck and half of it was spew (I spewed off almost 3k USD in one hand trying to bluff some chubby Chinese boy (I think he was from New Zealand or something cos he spoke with some accent). Fortunately I made about 5k back on FTP
Jul 2011: Realized that FTP was screwed. A good amount of money stuck there. Left for exchange in Europe
Oct-Nov 2011: Had the biggest downswing of my life. Wasn't playing my best but definitely did not deserve to lose that much (Lost more than what good regs make in a month)
Dec 2011-Now: Rebuilding, doing quite well now.
Jan-Mar 2012: Wrote a poker book entitled The Art of Poker. You can check it out at the Marketplace if you have not.
I play Zoom NL200-500 SH at Pokerstars as my main game now and I also mix in NL400-1000 SH tables when they are good. I have some experience with PLO SH/HU NLHE HU/FR as well but my main game atm is NLHE SH. Lastly I would like to mention that I'm really glad I found Poker. I'm pretty positive that after I graduate I will play Poker Full-time and also get myself involved in several business ventures. This is my best shot at escaping the Rat Race and I'll gladly take it. I hope this blog can motivate some of you guys to continue trying hard and never give up even during hard times. If I can bounce back each time after 3-4 devastating downswings (losing 30-40% of your bankroll), I think others can also do the same, provided they continue grinding hard and adopt a never-say-die attitude.

I'll try to blog here regularly about interesting poker concepts, results, and post interesting hand histories with analysis. Let me know what you think.

Let's start the second post with a hand history from today's session.

Poker Stars $500.00 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players - View hand 1751668
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

BTN: $500.00
SB: $1764.20
Hero (BB): $1017.80
UTG: $1214.65
MP: $612.20
CO: $252.50

Pre Flop: ($7.50) Hero is BB with AImage JImage
3 folds, BTN raises to $10, 1 fold, Hero calls $5

Flop: ($22.50) 3Image 5Image 8Image (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $15.00, Hero calls $15

Turn: ($52.50) KImage (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $40.00, Hero calls $40

River: ($132.50) QImage (2 players)
Hero checks, BTN bets $97.27, Hero raises to $277.50, BTN calls $180.23

Final Pot: $687.50
BTN mucks KImage 9Image
Hero shows AImage JImage
Hero wins $684.70
(Rake: $2.80)

Opponent has very high barrel frequencies and he's likely to rep all of my outs (the ace or the flush). I like to play my nut flush draws passively because
1. we have showdown value vs his straight and flush draws
2. opponent will try to rep straights with his flush draws if those cards complete and rep flushes with his straight draws. this means that it would be really difficult to get to showdown with my medium strength hands if i don't balance this line of c/c F c/c T with my monsters as well.

I would be more inclined to c/r if I was willing to get stacks in on the Flop with my nut flush draw. Whereas with my weaker flush draws I can very safely c/r/f to a flop 3bet.

The final result was funny. It just shows how little credit people give me (because I bluff really often in such spots by turning weak made hands into bluffs).

I played for 3 hours today, had a really huge losing session. Not really focused cos I feel quite tired, getting abused in many spots, and overall just running really bad. I made a few huge blunders as well.

1) I should definitely bet/fold this River. Villain is 31/15, kind of a semi-passive player. I'm not beating any hand at this point because he probably raises 2pair on the turn and most players will slowplay straights until the very end. He is never bluffing me when I pot the River because I rep so much strength. Getting 20% pot odds on the River.

Straights: T9 (16 combos), 56s (4 combos)
Sets: 77 (3 combos)
Basically need him to have at least 5 combos of bluffs. Not even possible even if he has 78s every single time.

Pre Flop: ($7.50) Hero is CO with 4Image 4Image
2 folds, Hero raises to $12.50, BTN calls $12.50, 2 folds

Flop: ($32.50) 7Image JImage 4Image (2 players)
Hero bets $25.00, BTN calls $25

Turn: ($82.50) 8Image (2 players)
Hero bets $75.00, BTN calls $75

Final Pot: $1130.90
BTN shows 9Image TImage
Hero shows 4Image 4Image
BTN wins $1128.10
(Rake: $2.80)

2) Never chase flush draws on paired boards. It's already marginal if I had the nut flush draw. I should be folding all worse flush draws. I was hoping he had 7X instead of a full house so I opted to call given the great pot odds. I think many players will choose to slowplay fullhouses on the Flop unless there is an aggressive dynamic.

BB wins $1091.60
(Rake: $2.80)

3) Opponent is a TAG. I might fold 88 preflop a lot vs good LAGs or just 4bet/call because it's really difficult to play OOP with such hands especially if you don't flat 3bets OOP with AK/JJ+ as well for balance (which I don't do very often). But this guy made it really small and I also think he's really straight forward so I think I can play this well.

Hero checks, CO bets $55.00, Hero calls $55

Turn: ($197.50) KImage (2 players)
Hero checks, CO checks

The standard player barrels this scarecard every single time. (I would have folded my hand though). It's pretty obvious he has JJ or QQ at this point in time.

River: ($197.50) TImage (2 players)
Hero checks, CO bets $115.00, Hero raises to $982.85, CO folds

I check, hoping to get to showdown though I know i'm almost always beat. Donking serves no purpose cos I am not putting enough pressure on him to make him fold his hand. He bets half pot for value and at this point in time, I cannot call. So the question is whether I should ship to bluff or to fold. I think given that this guy is not a hero-caller and we don't have much history, I opted to shove. I could possibly rep AK but also every single set and perhaps some two pairs. This is because he made a small 3bet. If his 3bet was larger I would be less likely to defend these low pocket pairs.

Final Pot: $427.50
Hero wins $424.70

Flop: ($30.00) KImage TImage 8Image (2 players)
Hero bets $20.05, BB calls $20.05

Standard

Turn: ($70.10) JImage (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $37.50, Hero calls $37.50

This is a card that improves the caller's range a lot more than mine. I think from a game theory perspective I am checking this Turn really often to give up. I need some hands in my check/calling range to protect all my other hands which will check/fold. AQ got there too (though he should be 3betting it preflop a lot), J9 improved to pair + gutshot, as well as a bunch of other hands.

River: ($145.10) TImage (2 players)
Hero checks, BB bets $97.50, Hero calls $97.50

This is a really sick River Card. I'm not beating much at this point in time but I call hoping that he either valuebets with KQ (since he might assume I would valuebet the turn with AK so he has the top kicker) or turn some random 8X/QJ/J9 into a bluff. I do believe I have the right odds to call here and folding is really exploitable when im at the top of my range.

Final Pot: $340.10
Hero shows AImage KImage
BB shows 7Image 8Image
Hero wins $337.30
(Rake: $2.80)

5) This is a spot where I see many players make the mistake of checking back the River after picking up showdown value. I bet the Turn to rep the Ace because given the preflop action and positions, I have every single Ace in the deck. I'm definitely calling as weak as A2 vs a minraise in Blind vs Blind. On the River, I am putting him mostly on hands like 99-QQ and I opted to bet a size which screams "value" so he folded.

1) Poker Stars $1000.00 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players - View hand 1753569
DeucesCracked Poker Videos Hand History Converter

CO: $1015.00
Hero (BTN): $1000.00
SB: $592.35
BB: $1239.25
UTG: $464.90
MP: $1035.79

MP is a very strong Russian TAG, SB is a 31/14 fish

Pre Flop: ($15.00) Hero is BTN with 9Image TImage
1 fold, MP raises to $30, 1 fold, Hero calls $30, SB calls $25, 1 fold

Flop: ($100.00) QImage 5Image JImage (3 players)
SB checks, MP bets $72.75, Hero calls $72.75, SB folds

I have 2 options here. I could raise or I could call. I think calling is fine to let the fish in. I doubt he folds any big flush draws and also may call with a lot of QX hands. Raising also makes me look weaker IMO because I could be slowplaying here to lure the fish in.

Turn: ($245.50) 2Image (2 players)
MP bets $180.00, Hero raises to $423, MP folds

Now is the time to raise. I have 30% equity vs all one-pair hands and 25% equity vs 2-pairs and sets. The important thing is to commit yourself when you are making this play. In this case I have already invested half my stack so if he did jam I will be getting 25% or less odds. I can rep all QQ/JJ and sometimes QJs as well because I wouldn't necessarily 3bet preflop against a tight raiser from EP/MP. I also slowplay these hands to let the fish enter the pot as well and MP is good enough to recognise this.

Final Pot: $605.50
Hero wins $602.50
(Rake: $3.00)

2) Poker Stars $500.00 No Limit Hold'em - 6 players - View hand 1753575

Hero (BTN): $772.18
SB: $500.00
BB: $718.42
UTG: $785.80
MP: $575.64
CO: $454.02

Pre Flop: ($7.50) Hero is BTN with QImage KImage
UTG raises to $15, MP calls $15, 1 fold, Hero raises to $55, 3 folds, MP calls $40

Squeezing here with KQo is pretty standard. It just plays poorly in a multi-way pot. We also block hands like AK/QQ which can 4bet us.

Flop: ($132.50) 5Image TImage AImage (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $60.00, MP calls $60

Cbetting is standard, we have a gutshot and can rep AQ/AK quite well.

Turn: ($252.50) 3Image (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $100.00, MP calls $100

I'm putting our opponent mostly on AQ now, occasionally KQ. Betting turn without shoving river would be terrible. I felt that I could push him off AQ because he wasn't that loose and also because the board was rainbow, meaning I can't be barreling the turn with any flushdraws. And people do not always barrel gutshots.

River: ($452.50) 8Image (2 players)
MP checks, Hero bets $557.18, MP calls $360.64 all in

Very surprising result, almost everyone 4bets this pre-flop so I marked a note on him after the hand.

Final Pot: $1173.78
Hero shows QImage KImage
MP shows AImage KImage
MP wins $1170.98
(Rake: $2.80)

3) This is a really nasty spot. I'm still not sure if I can fold here. Definitely shipping 88 and 66 but if villain is also stacking off 86s and perhaps the occasional AA then I have to shove this for sure. If the board was 962s or T62s then it would be even sicker and I might be able to find a fold. Given how strong I look (especially when deep), even a player with AA should be shitting in his pants right now. Of course if this was 100BB this is snap all-in. Guy in the middle is a fish which makes my play look more weighted towards the nuts.

A few hands from yesterday

Postby gosubay » Mon May 07, 2012 7:31 am

I played 6k hands yesterday (6 hours) and won some money back. here are a few hands

1) I have never played vs villain before but from the small sample on him I think he is a regular. River shove is terrible without dynamic because I can never be bluffing with the completion of the flush, thus he can never herocall me with AK or AQ. So I am isolating myself against sets and flushes, and sometimes 78s (Which was terrible play by him btw, calling the turn raise with the low end of the straight draw)

Final Pot: $2327.00
Hero shows AImage TImage
UTG shows 7Image 8Image
UTG wins $2324.00
(Rake: $3.00)

2) This hand is interesting. My hand after calling 2 streets looks a lot like AQ or a set. Thus I think villain is going to be check/folding KK and even AK here. The best way for me to get value is to bet small and hope to get a crying call because I'm sure he lays down his hand. I might have the occasional 57s or 97s due to stack depth but that's not happening all that often I suppose. I can easily have JhTh Jh9h Th9h and if he shoves AK i'm never hero-calling with a hand like KQ when the backdoor flush draw completes.

3) This is a really nasty spot. I would probably fold AA here but I'm hoping that he may do this for value or with some random ass bluff enough of the time. 45s and flushdraws all got there but this 60/30 opponent is kind of a weird aggro fish.

Just started internship on Monday, life sucks. Need to last for 10 weeks before I can put in serious volume again. I feel quite tired after work so i don't think I can try to go for SNE anymore because i need to average 5 hours a day.

1) Sometimes it's necessary to slowplay Preflop. I don't have recent history with him but I think he has a really polarized and bluff heavy 3betting range which will not jam light. He probably thought there was not enough history between us for me to justify slowplaying so he assumed my range was capped on this dry board and barreled away.

2) I decided to take a silly fancy play line to induce spew vs this guy cos I felt he was aggro. And true enough, he didn't give me credit for raising an Ace on this board because I will 3bet AK mostly and occasionally AQ so my range is kind of air heavy in this spot.

3) Standard 2 barrel spot with combodraw. My intention was to bluff all spade rivers and give up on blanks. I think he might have hero-called with AQ on a blank.

5) The big bet size scared me. This guy had really passive aggression frequencies so I decided that he was just taking a stupid line with 7X and folded. There aren't any busted draws since I think he would check a hand like 56 and try to get to showdown.

6) I look pretty strong after calling 2 streets from MP. My range looks a lot like sets, flushes and maybe AK/AQ with the Kh/Qh. I don't think he is bluffing very often especially with the overbet so I folded. Not sure if he is exploiting me though, but I don't have too many suited hands when I call from MP (would have way more from BTN)

7) This is a really terrible Turn Card. I was debating whether to fold right away or call and decide on blank rivers. Really nasty spot. KTs beat me and so does AQ/AA, I think he checks back KK and KQ a lot. I think I should probably just fold and spare myself the trouble because I think I make many costly mistakes on the river.

Have not played for the past 2 days but I woke up early at 8 am to put in a 4 hour session. It went quite well.

1) Villain is a disbeliever and very bluffy. My flop donking range looks a lot like flush draws and gutshots, I could also have some twopairs and sets. On the River I doubt he would hero-call anything if I potted it cos I am not repping many bluffs. So I opted to make a half-pot bet, firstly to perhaps get a crying call, and secondly, to induce bluffs. He spazzed as expected.

2) Same villain as hand 1. This guy has been cold 4-betting me a lot and I know he is full of shit. I decided to click it back with a 7bet because I'm quite sure he is bluffing >50% of the time and I'm risking 260 more to win 797 so my bluff only needs to work 30% of the time.

3) This is a really loose player. He has way more 8X hands than over-pairs so the best way to maximise my value is to shove and hope he calls. Too bad he had a boat.

4) Made a really disciplined fold. Villain donked the river really quickly. I don't see how he could ever be bluffing on this particular card. He probably has KQ or perhaps QQ. I would be checking back AK quite often.

5) Villain is a tight but decent TAG. Given the multi-way action, he either has 99, QX, or a flush. He probably checks back his top pairs on the Turn so his betting range is mostly 99 and flushes. I think my odds are slightly worse than my equity but I do have some implied odds if i boat up. I cannot bet for value except against hands like AQ with the Ace of diamond but overall I am behind his calling range so I checked.

I think it could have worked better if I used a 70% pot bet instead of a 100% pot bet (which really looks like me turning something into a bluff) cos I'm never betting with this size with my value hands.
