Micro-stakes Challenge

Postby gosubay » Sat Jun 09, 2012 1:17 pm

I have not been able to play my best game these few weeks, mainly because of my internship. And since I have been writing a new book (mostly at work), I decided to drop back to the micro-stakes. With a fresh deposit of $600, I will try to move back to NL200 ASAP, using a slightly aggressive bankroll management system. I will move up when I have 30 buy-ins, which i think is aggressive for normal players trying to move up in today's state of the games (50 buyins seems better in 2012 though 30 was definitely alright in 2009), but it seems reasonable for me given that I have so much more experience at higher limits and have a much larger edge.

I'll experience every single limit from 5c/10c onwards to 1$/2$ and then find out common errors made by regulars at those limits and document everything down into a book. So far I've written 50 000 words of content - I intend to add at least another 25 000 more words, including a ton of REAL hand history examples from my database, quizzes, and some higher limit content. The book is going to be divided into 3 sections, uNL, SSNL, and MSNL. This is going to be a significant improvement from my old Book not only in terms of organisation and content, but also with nicer looking illustrations (vector graphics now instead of rasterized, pixelated graphics).

I'm going to be paying more attention to making it professional, and putting in more effort in marketing + advertising, since my previous book was pretty much a Flop, having sold only 15 copies. I was reading a lot of TheOatMeal.com at work and I got inspired by his art style. It's kind of crude and simple but looks kind of neat anyway so I figured I would be capable of reaching his level just by adding some simple "3D" effects to make the images look nicer.

I earned a lot because there were so many spazzy players. My impression right away is that the micro-stakes is still pretty much a goldmine and absolutely no one should be stuck there if he chooses to put in enough effort to work on his game.

1) Villain is Russian, I didn't have too many reads on him except that he was like 50 VPIP over 10 hands. I wonder what I would have done without trips, might have folded.

2) This guy is another Russian. Also had aggro stats over low sample (57% 3bet over 15 hands which is probably 4 out of 7 times). Of course I'm gonna 4bet bluff him but he calls. I start to think he is full of it so I decided to induce (I expected him to shove 99+ most of the time pre) and on the Turn I felt that I should just protect anyway since the pot is already so large. He calls, and I laugh at the result.

3) I didn't have a good read on this guy but I felt he seemed like a reg so I decided to 3barrel bluff here. I think it's not a good idea to bluff without better information (I tend to spazz quite a bit in such spots) so I should try to restraint myself. His Pre-Flop and Flop calls were terrible given that my UTG range is really strong (stronger broadways or pairs). I didn't expect him to have too many JX besides AJ some of the time, and some sets. I also expected him to 3-bet pre a lot of the time with large pocketpairs (again an assumption given that I don't have a strong read on him).

Profit: $67

Pretty disappointing session, especially when I was up $170 at one point in time. Ran really bad at 5c/10c with many coolers. I'm above EV though, but I would say that my luck was bad today. Most of my large wins were from huge errors from my opponents and my losses were from hands which I could not lay down (lost 90$ to set over set and flush over flush)

1) Overplaying Over-pairs - This is a spot where I am never bluffing and I don't really have too many speculative hands anyway given the starting positions. I have JTs/all sets, maybe some players may raise 2-pair in my spot as well if they expect all overpairs to go broke. It's a board where you look really strong cbetting into 2 other players. I would always put UTG on an overpair or a draw at the very least. Once I raise he can definitely fold for sure - people don't bluff in 3way pots very often. When the other guy calls, he should fold all medium strength made hands like overpairs, call with draws, and shove sets or better.

2) Villain's pre-flop play is questionable but I wouldn't say it's bad against me since my range in that spot is actually pretty wide. I don't think he had enough reads on me to do that profitably though. Coldcalling the 3bet with KQs would make it really tough for him to play. Given the odds I was getting I was definitely going to set-mine. As played, he should have check/folded because I can't really have any floats and when I bet the Turn my range is AK or better.

3) This is actually a very tough spot. I would have folded an even lower flush. I only called here given the odds, with the hope that he occasionally has a lower flush and may be bluffing some non 0% of the time. People don't take this line as a bluff in a 3way pot. I would call a Jack high flush, Queen high flush is pretty close between a shove on the River and a call.

Actually played for another hour on Day 2, lost $38.

Today
Profit: +$103
Hands: 9190
Time: 460 min
Game: 4 tables NL25 2 tables NL10 SH Zoom
Split into 3 sessions

I'm still not playing too well. Making many mistakes which I could have easily avoided. I am also doing dumb stuff like 3betting from blinds vs UTG without any reads. Need to stop doing such stuff and only bluff readless IP to create dynamic.

Did much better today. People are still making a ton of mistakes so I am making money for sure.

1) Really tough spot. Villain is 23/16 over a really small sample so I am readless here. I stacked off hoping that villain had AJ or AQ or QJ which overplayed. But if he has AJ and AQ he should have KT too. I'm not too far behind straights and flushes though, but I'm crushing twopair and maybe even JJ (he does not necessarily squeeze it) pretty hard. I also expect many people to slowplay the King high flush so that removes a good amount of flush combos he could have.

2) Villain has very spazzy stats and before this hand, I saw him squeeze small with JT and call a 4bet OOP, then he open jammed 3X the pot on a AJX monotone board without the flush draw. I know he's full of shit in this situation and the river pairing the queen made it really easy for me to call down (I was quite afraid of the Q actually cos of KQ/AQ/QJ).

3) The plan was to 4bet/fold. I think villain flats everything (perhaps even KK) and shoves AA/KK. I did see him flat QQ OOP vs my min5bet (and I did spazz off my entire stack) so I assumed he would do the same here even though both scenarios aren't exactly the same. Villain is 21/17/11, and squeezes a fair bit.

As played, I think I lose to 100% of hands except KQ turned into a bluff. I doubt he does that so I am crushed by all the broadway JX and AQ which is a good part of his range so I fold. Even if the Jack didn't pair the board I think I would have just folded.

4) The min5bet - I used to fold against this all the time since it was AA 75% of the time and KK 15% of the time. But after having used this as a bluff all the time at mid-stakes, and also having Russians at NL25 min5bet with merged range like AQ or some random crap, I just didn't feel like folding. Villain was 50/50/100 over 3 hands and I think he was from some Eastern European country so I didn't want to fold.

5) Another sick board. I lose to like most of his hands so my best way to play is to turn my AK into a bluff catcher and hope he bluffs or maybe valuebet AJ in a silly manner, expecting me to never check AK on the Flop.

6) Bad mistake on my part. The stack to pot ratio was quite awkward because villain had 70BB so I thought it was a 3bet pot and decided to stack off. This is an easy fold, a limp/caller has at least 6-10 combos of 5Xs in his range and he never does this with KQ or KJ (he might with 50BB and they usually shove instead of raise to an amount which is not all-in).

I am playing a lot better now but ran super bad. Another reason why my winrate isn't as high as it should be is that I cannot bluff as much as I want to. I have 10-20 hands on everyone at the very most, with a 400 player pool. I can hardly find great spots to bluff without "spazzing". Running at 26/21/5 today, I don't really like to bluff 3bet too much without reads. I think that at least 40-50% of the player pool are recreational players.

1) Villain is 20/16/18 over 50 hands. I think he was at 21/7 over a smaller sample earlier on. His play is pretty ridiculous, I was betting small hoping he somehow had a random KX or QQ hand which could call the bet. Or perhaps just spazz at me. I didn't really expect him to have AQ too often cos c/c Turn with that hand is pretty terrible.

2) Such a tough spot. Villain is 12/9 over a small sample. We were deep so I had to flat. I'm not too sure whether to give credit to him or not, people do l/rR a lot as UTG but I hardly see people limp behind and then reraise, it's just not a very good play when I could easily check in the BB and it creates multiway action way too often cos everyone behind gets such great odds.

3) I opted to play more passively on the Flop because there are some guys who just check/shove and I don't wish to call off my stack with JJ. The Queen hits and once again I don't really put people on AQ too often but this guy somehow has it. Seems that certain guys like to make such 3bets for some silly reason.

all are zoom, normal is too slow :D

Profit: +$48
Hands: 2600
Time: 130 min
Game: 4 tables NL25 2 tables NL10 SH Zoom
Overall Profit: +$165, 17 hours of play

Not sure if played somewhat tilted. I still think I should be making close to 0 mistakes but a lot of stuff affects my perception of things. Like even when the Russian has nit stats 11/9 over 70 hands i still call down 3 streets light with 2nd pair just because of his nationality. I think you should trust this country read when you have low sample and they seem spazzy but not when they are quite tight over a decent sample.

1) 38/28/25 over 70 hands, 3bets 5 out of 20 times and 30% restealing from blinds. Easy call Pre-flop but I was readless on his tendencies. Guy is a Ukranians and they are basically the same as Russians so I was going to call 3 streets if I did hit top pair.

When he took the c/c c/shove Line it's most likely weirdly played Aces. My plan was actually to 3barrel for thin value, putting him on JJ or maybe he herocalls me down with AK (not too much reason to think he would). But I also had no reason to believe that he would check anything strong on the Flop besides top set. Called hoping he could be on some sort of spazz with AK or some random QX shit. Not too sure whether I like my play or not, it's really difficult to play with very few reads. Well, I was "supposed" to know what I was going to do before I bet the Turn, but I really didn't expect him to have a c/c c/shove range at all.

2) 21/18 Russian, other stats all look aggro. This is another spot where I would fold to a standard reg cos they don't take the Bet Check Bet line as a bluff very often. But he's Russian, I can't help but be paranoid about him bluffing here so I call being given great odds. I still don't think it's bad though, I can't be right all the time after all.

3) I decided not to barrel the Turn cos the only thing I'm folding out is his straight draws. Remember that the main purpose of barreling Turns is to fold out hands weaker than Top Pair. That's clearly not the case here cos he either has gutshots like Ace high, trips, or top pair or flush draw.

4) This guy is 100/0 over 4 hands. I'm not going to believe him for sure. Recreational players bluff at paired boards really often. I wasn't sure about his barrel frequencies but I was getting great odds on a call and I think he gives up REALLY often on the Turn. When I hit I decided I had showdown value and I would check to induce a bluff again. I was calling on ANY RIVER, including K/Q rivers since his range was really wide. As we can see here he had 23o which is like the worst hand in Holdem so he really plays 100% of hands.

Also made $72 in 40min at work playing 4 tables of NL25 SH normal tables. Ran well today, coolered 2 stacks from my opponents (set over set, twopair over twopair). Also flopped a straight flush. I decided that from today onwards I'm going to be making more tight folds. It feels better to think you played well with great hero-folds than to make bad calls and feel stupid :)

1) Opponent is 1-tabling and seems kind of bad. I decided that he's folding everything that is worse than a King. And he's never folding a K or better so I potted for value and shoved the River. Would have bet smaller on turn and river if not for the pairing. Fishes love to play according to absolute hand strength

3) Decided to call pre cos of odds and stack depth. I actually thought the 3-bet was smaller than it actually was. Probably should be folding against such a tight guy. Turn is really nasty. I think I should fold right away since the board is already paired so if I hit my King I would still lose to AA which is a good part of his range.

4) I made a very sick hero fold, Villain is 13/9 (8/5 during the hand) and stacks are 150BB deep. He would definitely have 22 and 33 in his range. Perhaps even KK (and AA but he should 4bet AA most of the time). Given that he's a nit, I doubt he ever raises stuff like JJ on the Turn and it just seems really stupid to try pushing me off QQ+ so I figured that he could have 2 combos of Quads, sometimes A2s/A3s due to stack depth (but would he open those pre?) and maybe half the combos of KK so I folded. He reps a narrow range but he doesn't really rep any bluffs. The minraise on the Turn is usually a monster anyway even in a 3bet pot.

5) Pretty ridiculous for me to get called here. I expected him to either have a boat (and shove) or fold. Only can see 2 combos of A2s and he should squeeze JJ+ always, and fold TT and below. Things don't work out the way I want them to.

6) This guy is a slovak. He has aggressive stats over a small sample but since he's eastern european I just assume he's aggro. I think Flop check is fine - I'm going to be playing guessing games given that I had no reads but I was going to call once or twice depending on my mood. His river sizing didn't look all that strong so I decided that he could either have some midpairs trying to get value from my AK or some random crap air. He isn't going to have TX too often. Most importantly I had the Kd. I was wrong again

Day 8 - 16 Jun 2012

Postby gosubay » Sat Jun 16, 2012 1:45 pm

Had a fairly good session today. Felt tired and did not play yesterday so I slept at 2300 and woke at 0640 to play.

Profit: +$162
Hands: 7407
Time: 6h 20min
Game: 4 tables NL25 2 tables NL10 SH Zoom
Overall Profit: +$405, 26 hours of play

My bankroll now stands at $1305, including some bonuses and also about $140 of profit playing on my phone at work. I should be moving up to NL50 in less than a week's time. Not sure if I should just move up when I hit 1.5k, or $900 in raw profit on my PC before moving up. I think I'll just move up ASAP, I'm actually wasting time playing low limits anyway. but had to move down cos of constant bad luck at midstakes.

I actually ran really bad today but I played quite well and we have the typical weekend fish to feed me. Checked my top 15 pots won and more than half of them were from stupid plays by my opponents.

1) This was a pretty funny hand, Villain was actually quite tight from the blinds (folds like 80%+). He said "No" in the chat for no reason so I kept saying "Yes". On the river I have to bet small to get a crying call from twopairs and sets. I also want to get one-card straights to raise (if you pot they may not raise, fearing that you have the higher straight). No guy is a Norwegian anyway.

2) I don't really know whether the river card is good or bad for me. It may make AA fold, but AK probably wouldn't, and KJ now beats me. Anyway I can't do anything but shove. Villain had low 3bet so it was really tilting to see KJo. I wouldn't be so upset if I ran into JJ. If I had won this pot I would be moving up to NL50 today :)

Really retarded to have some stupid one-pair guys runner runner higher boats twice in a row. They have like 2-3% equity against me on the Flop. Note that it's better just to bet big on the Turn right away cos he's never folding an Ace. Makes it really easy for him to call the River.

Re: gosubay's blog - overcoming MSNL at Pokerstars

Postby adrenalineJ84 » Sat Jun 16, 2012 10:54 pm

Hi Gosubay, first off lemme say nice blog and great analysis. I've been grinding 25NL 6-max for awhile now and really appreciate how in-depth your hand analysis is. It's helped me in working on my game substantially. I can totally empathise with you regarding the Eastern Euro and Russian players - from my experience they steal like crazy, take mid-pair good kicker all the way and check-raise with only a gutshot draw, along with other stupid stuff. I think their mentality is: "I don't want to win money, I want to win pots!"

Anyway, I've got a few questions for you, hope you'll entertain me!

1) In your experience, how much does skill level differ between 25NL/50NL/100NL/200NL players in 6-max? I've been grinding the 25NL 6-max games on Stars for a few months now seeking to move up and am trying to estimate how much time/effort I need to put into my game before I can start playing higher. Currently I'm only beating the games for 1BB/100 over 60,000 hands and am only able to handle 4 tables simultaneouly for now. In order to work on my game, I've been looking at poker software like Combonator - it's similar to Pokerstove but is able to do postflop range analysis as well.

2) What are the juiciest times to play in your experience? Where you have tons of fish stacking off to you every 20mins or so with their TPGK v.s. your set, instead of having a table full of regs getting into 3-4bet wars preflop almost every hand and then bad-beating your [As] [Ac] with a flopped [Jd] [Jc] [Jh] ? Personally I've found that 9pm-12am has alot of recreational players and 8am-12pm has alot of regs who are tired out from playing marathon sessions i.e. 6hours or more.

That's all I can think of for now, good luck at the tables!

Day 9 and 10, 17 and 18 Jun 2012

Postby gosubay » Mon Jun 18, 2012 9:43 pm

hi adrenaline

skill level goes up by a lot with each limit. NL50 guys are a lot more aggro preflop (and these days there are quite a few very aggro NL25 regs too). And at NL100 and NL200 their balance is much better and they are just much better at handreading. If you can't beat NL25 at a higher winrate i suggest you stay where you are at. MOving up too soon will just slow u down in the long run. And best times are euro peak times which is our midnight-early morning.

@Dublimax: not making any vids at the moment.

17 Jun Day 9
Played 2 hours on Sunday. Poker Stars kept crashing and I think I might have lost a few dollars here and there. Overall I was down -64 yesterday.

18 Jun Day 10
I lost another 10+ on my phone. I started playing NL50 HU. On my way to work, I bought in for 40$ and minraised with 93o (was playing in the train). Opponent flatted with 95o in BB and donked the 953ss flop :( Made everything back and more when I was dominating some other guy. I find that against the majority of NL50 HU regs, i am automatically profiting from my pre-flop strategy alone. They fold too much vs 3bets and fold too many BB. And many of them raise to 3X which gives me a lot of free dead money to pick up.

Today I ran quite good esp at the start. Not sure what happened at the end but I won 2 pots as a big underdog.

Villain is somewhat tight and perhaps my play could be justified in BU vs CO (but i wouldn't flat AK pre then). For some reason I thought he would have more KX combos but now that I think about it, he has more boats than KQ and he probably doesnt really have KJ and KT

I decided that most AA should bet the Turn and I was mostly betting for thin value and protection (yes it's thin vs a 9/5 guy) but i was hoping to gain value from AsK or something since such nits are usually tight passive and will not 2barrel draws. River is mehh, a halfpot bet is definitely a mistake. Not sure if my tiny bet is +EV or not. Would he call with JJ when he's such a nit? would he even have JJ preflop? probably not? maybe he doesnt even have AK. Not really sure but my sample is not that large on him so i decided to go for a thin bet.

Day 11 - 19 Jun 2012

Postby gosubay » Wed Jun 20, 2012 7:43 am

NL50 HU went very badly. I was playing throughout lunch and even a little in the office. Lost 140 to one single opponent. I realized a good way to find out whether the reg is good or not. Just see if he's minraising. So far from my experience those with 3X raises are way easier to exploit.

Internet was lagging hard at night so I decided to sleep at 2130 and woke up at 0500 to play. Halfway through the session I got really annoyed at NL10 so I just switched them up for NL50 tables. Ended up being a good decision. Also watching some BFP videos (some guy playing HU vs Sauce123, can't rmb his name)

1) Turn c/c is probably fine since I could turn some Ace highs into bluffs and also flush draws but river is terrible, simply because he blocks a lot of my floats with his two 9s. He needs to put me on a lot of gutshots and overs or ace highs but I wouldn't bet Ace high on the Turn unless it was a flush completing card (cos people will still c/c turn a lot)

5) He was short and probably a 1-tabling fish so I folded, putting him mostly on KQ. I wonder if I can call the shove in BvB. He was quite tight and I block AK anyway. The multiway dynamic made things more interesting
-I should look a lot stronger when I barrel
-pot gets bigger relative to stack size so people like to shove for protection more often

Re: gosubay's blog - overcoming MSNL at Pokerstars

Forgot to post abt Days 12 and 13 here but I'll continue with the past 2 days.

Day 15

I didn't play very well today. Spazzed quite a bit. I got owned by this LAG who took $124 off me. He was running at 28/20/20, 3betting 40%+ against my late position raises. My usual stats aren't that aggro, running at 27/22/7 but I have been directing my aggression towards him only.

1) I had some options. Call Call, or bet Flop and take it from there. I think he has so much broadway bullshit that I decided to call off my entire stack, provided a J-A doesn't fall. He should be putting me on AK a lot so I doubt he bluffs those cards. Q and J just hits his range a lot so I can't call.

(Rake: $1.72)

2) Went for a cold 4bet bluff against his BU 3bet vs UTG and both of them reshipped on me.

3) Given the dynamic, I wanted to go for 3 streets of thin value. I think KQ is easy 3barrel, QJ is probably a 3barrel too. I'm not too sure about QT though. I feel he has a ton of JJ or random QXs and so far I have been bluffing against him every single time. On the river I don't see how I'm ever good. I would probably call off with KQ+ though, hoping that I chop some small % of the time. Maybe I should check back instead.

4) I think this was bad play. Of course in my mind he doesn't rep anything. But given the dynamic, as well as his raise size, I think I should just fold cos he should be taking a "rep air with a real hand" type of line more often than not.

5) This is vs another guy. I should just fold the Turn. It's a good line to take to induce bluffs when deep (cos I did it on someone else in the past and it worked out really well). The board hardly has any straight draws so he cannot be donking with some sort of gutshot all that often (unless he had 22 or 44). On the river, I decided that a smaller sizing looks just as strong anyway because of the 4 straight and I want to rep a wider value range of sets + straights so I should bet slightly smaller instead of potting it and repping on straights.
